Full Version: Weekly Drawing Challenge May 10 - May 16, 2009

Hi, I'm Marisa, your host this week. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered several reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you would like to host a Weekly DRAWING Challenge in the future. Please contact Paulette4.

Hope you enjoy these photos from a trip to Bulgaria.

Hi, Marisa,

I can see you have taken a photo of a church which is right across the street from where I live. I am truly sorry that you didn't find time to call me or maybe you did phone and you didn't find me.
Next time!
I feel obliged to make some drawings now - I am starting!

Happy Mothers' Day!

Oh, that's great! I thought you have somehow managed to come, take the photos in a hurry and go back! please, call me when you come!
Here's a small sketch of one of the churches - not the one that I live nearby.

Hi, I'm Marisa, your host this week. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Hi, MARISA, Happy Mother's Day!
Here is a modest contribution for the beginning of the week. I'll be back later,

I've been reading about negative spaces. So here's my attempt at the Church using this method.

Sveta17
A very nice 'negative space' sketch it is.

Here's a small sketch of the cat/dog feud with a felt tip. Have changed the composition a bit.

Sveta, It's lovely. Is that colored pencil? How big is the sketch?

Sveta, your dog looks very amused smile.gif Glad you compressed the space between the animals.

I tried the dog and cats with various graphites on Strathmore. It measures about 8 x 5"

Thank you, Marisa. The size of both sketches is 10/14cm. The church is with coloured pencils.
Of course, I will try the icon -it requires more time though and I'll do it on Saturday.
Thanks for the photos!

I tried to draw Christine with various graphites - paper unknown! Roughly 6" square
Songsparrow

I have continued on the old lady, taking into account advises from Paulette. May be the nose must be still a little bigger.

Happy Drawing!!!

I took up drawing Archangel Michael - almost two hours and a half ago. Couldn't finish it and got tired before the post closed. Sorry! Here's my unfortunate attempt.

Kay, thank you for the encouraging words- I found this to be quite a challenge- it has a lot of sophisticated elements, decorative ornaments and canonical rules in it (the little man in his hand is amazing ) , on the other hand the Archangel looks naive and innocent and kind-hearted while punishing the sinners. .. Lots of interesting things about it.
When I have some more time, I hope to finish it.
