In ten simple steps, you transform a single vertical line on a sheet of paper, into a drawing of a majestic spruce tree.

Beautiful lively exercise! I enjoyed the easiness of squirkling and finishing the whole tree in NO TIME!
Thank you, Brenda! I will bring this exercise to the attention of my students.

This was a very fun lesson. We all drew trees! ( 3 people learning to draw) They really looked like TREES!

I had trouble squirkling the branches. It seem different than the previous squirkling method. Was I supposed to use many small circles and lines to make the branches? Could someone better explain how to make the branches?

This was a good lesson. I really enjoyed it even though my tree didn't look like the example I think it turned out good. If everyones drawings turned out the same though you wouldn't see the individual persons perspective.

It was a fun lesson yet as I looked at the figures I noticed maybe different methods of Squirkle where some may turn out being smoother and yet some were more course as in the trunk compared to the branches. I think I need to learn more about Squirkling. It was still fun though.

Wow!
What a great lesson!
I actually drew a tree!!!
As my ultimate goal is to learn to draw nature and landscapes, this is by far my most favourite lesson.
Not sure if I am ready for the timer-challenge though.
It took me 45 minutes to draw the tree, and not sure if I will ever be able to do it in 5!
Thank you for the wonderful lessons.
I have grown so much since I first started.

It was a great lesson, and quite easy. Though, like some people here, I had some problems with the branches. The squirking method seemed to be different here than before, as if the loops were more edgy than round. The result is not bad, though my trees don't look as real as Brenda's. I would appreciate some more tips on how to obtain this edgy look of the branches...

is it possible to limit the display of the tree with the first levels of categories for example, the three first levels?
My problem is that the tree will become too much complicated and it take too much place in the column where i put it.
Thanks

Hello BestStarmetter!
I'm afraid I'm having a little difficulty understanding the question.
Are you having trouble displaying the reference image on your screen? If so - you can zoom in and out by moving the slider in the top-right corner of the lesson. You could also try increasing your display resolution.

This was alot of fun for me , with no formal lessons in my life this was one i found most intresting making images with squigly lines. for those who kept asking about the branches and squirkling i did change my style from loops to more harsh angle's to create more umm piny looky instead of a bubble tree. but ive never been one to do things exactly as im suppose to but it gave me in my humble opinion a realistic looking tree..

My spruce tree turned out very well.
The project of ten spruce trees took me a while doing but I was surprised with the outcome. My hand at the end was aching a bit but the final result is really good.
Thanks Brenda for getting me doing a trees that don't look like childs trees! There is hope after all...

I've enjoyed this lesson, but I think the details should be more clear regarding branchhes and leaves. Two small drawings of branches and leaves 'in progress' would help not to draw these elements somehow chaotic. Hoever, with some imagination, I managed to draw a proper tree

. The shades makes all the difference, but to keep measure of them and not exaggerate is quite demanding.
Thank you for this lesson, as well for all the others.

For those who are struggling here are some quick tips:
draw the squirkles using some circles but actually extending them to make it look like a branch. if you examine closely the drawing of brenda's branches you will see what I mean. It's like doodling of a oblong something but in a squirkle way meaning not in an orderly manner way.
I find this lesson very helpful and amazing. It makes the drawing of a simple tree look alive and real.
Have fun!

I found this hard to get the squirkling on the branches to look right, I tried and I tried but it didn't look like the example. Good lesson though, with practice I might even master it!
