Full Version: Weekly drawing challenge
Drawspace > Activities and Challenges > Challenges

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Here is a start to my stones picture.

Black stone henge paper with prisma colour pencils.

My idea is to put in all my values with white, so that when I start to add colour, the colour will glow compared to the black of the paper.
So far I have two or three different values, I hope to bring that up to about ten or so.
Also to give my shadows life, I will use several dark colours to make my own black. At this point I have put in indigo blue wherever I see pure black in the photo.

Nice work Mumwond, I can see Samantha in the girl and you really pulled off the little girl!

Good job catching all the ins and outs on the horse Raidor.

You guys make drawing a horses head look easy!

The biggest challenge for me was to get past the block I have had and actually pick up the pencils, then the challenge was to put them down and do the work I should have been doing to make my living. You win some and lose some. Started as a quick sketch on scratch paper , not my best but it felt good to actually draw something.

that looks pretty good
paulette4
I'm glad you got those pencils up.
That is what the challenge is all about!
I think it looks good.

Thanks Raidor and Paulette. How are the rocks coming Paulette?
paulette4
I'm afraid we had a huge birthday party here this past weekend and it got put aside.
I hope to get back to it soon.

Alright, this is my first drawing in a long time!! I think it came out pretty well, considering. I mean, it's not that great...I think the background is awful. For some reason, my camera didn't capture the depth of the eye, so it has more depth than is shown.

Raidor
beautiful, great job ivy.walker smile.gif

Nice work Ivy!
Photographing art is a whole new beast.
I like to set my work on a flat surface near a window or door opening with lots of light.(not direct)
I turn off the flash and use the macro setting.
While not perfect it does a decent job.

Thank you, paulette! Yeah, photographing art is something I have not quite mastered yet..

Raidor I really love the drawing that you did! It's really nice! smile.gif

I did some more work on my rocks.

Slow but eventually I get here..
Since i need to show the beginning in a sketch it's sort of sad.. I don't sketch with a lot of detail just placement mostly .. even that is subject to change. I followed up with liquid Graphite in the Grey # 9 and Sepia ,then a tint of watercolor. Most favorite of animals for me no matter what I use.. Thanks for the challenge !!

Thanks Paulette.. good to be back.. My schedule is probably the busiest time of the year for me .. Holidays always are.. never slows down and having this "sicky stuff" sure hasn't helped .. Hopefully I can stay on top of things and get back to doing what I love the most !!!
