Sketching is an action word, and you can only learn this skill by actually sketching. In this lesson, I first offer suggestions for putting together a portable studio for your outings. I then take you step-by -step through the process of rendering a sketch of an outdoor scene.

Brenda, this is my favorite lesson. You have explained how to draw in just this one lesson! You have made the basics of drawing so clear for me. This is gold! I have referred back to it many times to refresh my mind befor I draw something. No one had ever been able to explain it like this to me before! This should be a requirement of elementary art class!
Because of this lesson, I am going to upgrade! I want to keep a hard copy of this.

Thanks for the lessons. I had no plan to practice drawing althought I always loved to. After finding your site (by accident) I bought the tools and I am planing to follow your lessons one by one. So far I am enjoying every lesson.
Although I am happy about the result I sometimes wonder how you mange to do hatching so elegent. The lines seem all to be perfectly parallel with no crossing despite being some time very long. How often do you sharpen the penciles?
Ok, I go back to drawing and I am excited about it.
Thanks again

Well, thank you so very much!
"Elegant" (I love that word) hatching skills are acquired with practice - lots of practice. Throughout each day, when you take a break, have a sheet of paper and a pencil close by and draw lines - lots of lines.
I mostly use mechanical pencils for hatching. Each line is the same width and you don't have to stop every few seconds to sharpen the pencil.
Have fun!!!

I am always wanted to draw some kind of landscape. And my wish came true
Mine came a little bit different than original. Mostly because I hatched it in my style

I enjoyed this lesson, but probably raced through it too fast. I will try it again soon, perhaps actually outdoors! And I will give mechanical pencils a try. Thanks Brenda for that information.

I haven't even looked at the lesson yet and still...just by you guys' reply, I can't wait to start the lesson. I am 14 years old and I am writing a book. Though I not only want to write the book, I want to illistrate the book. It is a fantasy book that so far, I am about 50 pages into it. It is my dream to someday have my book published and become a best seller.

The outside scenery took me well over 5 hours, believe it or not. I also added the cone under this one since there is no place to put it. Together, I finished at 12 midnight on the dot.
