I have attached my first drawing and the photo upon which I based it.

For the first time I have drawn a portrait I am happy with the drawing, but the image came out looking much younger than the person in the photo upon which I based it.......

WHY?

Hi,

Welcome to Drawspace!

This is a good job, you are right to be happy with your drawing! There are a number of subtle differences between the photo and your portrait, and I'd say the one that most contributes to the portrait looking like a younger person is that the face in the portrait is a bit rounder, a bit wider side-to-side, a bit shorter top to bottom. Young people generally have rounder faces.

A few other areas to look at: the gentleman in the photo has eyebrows that peak near the edges of his face, but in the drawing they're rather symmetrical and peak in the middle. The photo shows a nose that is fairly narrow and has the center part clearly lower than the "wings", while in the drawing the bottom of the nose is fairly flat across.

Good pointers Ernest.

This is a good drawing Bart. smile.gif One thing that I also noticed was that in the photo the subject's hair are showing clear signs of grey, where as in the drawing the hair is more of the same color throughout.

I struggled with the issue of hair color,,,, I am not sure how to depict grey hair in a pencil drawing... I know it can be done, however, it is something I have yet to learn....

Thanks for your input.....I think a little more study and then "Uncle Ivan" will become the subject of another drawing......

Thank you for your observations.....
I got out my originals and reveiwed them as I read your comments.
It is amazing how I looked and looked at this drawing and didn't see those subtle details you pointed out.....
The roundness of the face I agree is probably the key, plus as noted below I must learn how to depict grey hair too.

The nose observation is also telling. I, like most beginners, have difficulty with noses and was just happy that it appeared at all like a nose, but yes you are correct in the photo the center of the nose definitely is lower than the wings......

All important points for me to consider.... A practice in observation as well a depiction.

thanks
