Everyone has a different way, but if I were to do this, I'd go large. At least 11" x 17" and crop out the right half of the image. Your erasing method can work, but you'll be inconsistent with your values and fight it more than anything IMO.
The key to something like this is time and patients. You can see that at the end of the day, the fabric is connecting straight lines, creating the diamonds as a result of the connecting fabric. Instead of focusing on the diamonds, focus on the fabric and draw your straight lines very lightly as a reference to build off of. I don't know how much sense this makes. Hope it helps.
I agree! Draw out the Darkest part very lightly with a 7H pencil (helps to keep it very light) As Poecilotheria said.. the desigen is just fat black straight line on angles. Once done fill, it in slowly and carefully. This is not a 2 hour drawing.. 2 weeks several hours a day. If you looking for photo realism that is.. To get that dark value you will need to build the graphite layers slowly and lightly, do not press hard or you will damage the surface of the paper and it will never get back. (hate pencil for this reason)
Gota take your time and step back away from the drawing every 20 minutes or so. Make sure you print out your reference and keep that hanging about 4ft from you so you can get perspective when you look up at it. You will find yourself focused on one tiny spot.. try and fight that..
Good luck!
