p.s. can some people check out my "3rd portrait attempt"?

Do you have a reference photo you can post? ...and can you post the images right into your post? It makes it a lot easier.
Before you can post the reference, I'll just point out the pupil. There is nothing wrong with using a scale or something else, even a piece of scrap paper as a tool to measure proportion or distance. Even a compass as a reference guide to get a good circle and center the pupil exactly.
Until I see the reference, I'll leave it at that.

This is just my opinion, but I'd try to steer away from using other peoples art as a reference. Nothing better than the real thing for accuracy.
Have you tried the grid method for proportion? Instead of pointing out the proportion issues, I'd rather go back a step and look at the root of the problem. If you start to use a grid, you'll get better at determining where things should go and later you won't really need the grid because you trained your mind to scale things. Always keep that in the back of your mind as you draw with a grid, that way you can not only use the grid lines as reference, but other lines already placed for the form of your drawing can be a guide as you go. Train the brain correctly with the use of a grid, than lose the grid if you want and don't feel you need it later.
Looking at your drawing in comparison to the reference, you need to really look at the very dark values and what they're doing. For example, the top eye lid. (This is why its bad to use other people's art as a ref photo, I find myself wanting to critique yours and theirs which makes this difficult).
So far, it looks as if your shading ability is more advanced than your proportion and form layout ability. You also need to get a better hold of the mid-tones by layering up instead of trying to 1 or 2 pass approaches to the target value.
If I post a reference photo, would you draw it?

Okay, I'll dig up a good reference with a lot of depth and contrast to it and post a new thread.
