Something I started of one of my favorite horror characters. It started out as a piece for the 20 min drawing challenge and went a bit beyond the scope of the challenge. I am still sticking to the 20 minute thing though. This represents about 3 hours 20 mins at a time.

Not a word huh?

Sorry Sabbath, it must have fallen through the cracks. sad.gif

You can definitely tell where you have been putting in time.
The pin heads look great and the lines look right.
You have a bit of measuring to do to get the head shape just right. (just went and looked again) I think the cheek on the right, you have rounded out and the photo is round in with a bit of ear showing to the side. (looking rounded out)
I can see on the nose that you have drawn what you see, but as artists sometimes it is good to add a touch of detail to make it look right.
Especially as, if you had the full size photo it would have given you detail in the nose shadow that you can't see on this small shot.
The right eye looks pretty good to me, the left eye doesn't seem quite there, but that may just be because you aren't done shading it.

Over all I think it is a great sketch. I would challenge you to make it a full finished drawing.

If you don't know how to approach a finished piece of art these are the steps to follow ( one of many ways I am sure).
Make a sketch on rough paper, take measurements and drop lines to see that everything is in its place and that you have a very good likeness.
Map out your shading on the sketch.
When you are happy with the sketch and it has all the information you need on it, transfer your drawing to a good piece of paper ( the best you can afford). I use the window method for transfer.
Draw the lines very lightly, as you do not want any out lines on your drawing or indents in your paper.
Next get shading and show us the results.smile.gif

Also this photo would work really well in Poe's One step at a time WIP.
The darkness and shading of your photo are very similar to that of Marilyn's photo. So you could feel free to give that a try with your photo. You could then post pictures there and follow along with the other people.

Thanks very much paulette, for taking the time to crit.
I've added some more pins and shading, however as you mentioned the poor subject photo I have chosen is making things a little tough. I'm not sure weather to trudge on or start over with a better photo. Shading is also an issue for me. Most of the time I just start rather than look and get a good definition as to where the light source is. With this one though, I am really taking my time and trying to be sure of myself before touching pencil to paper. I also recently invested in some mechanical pencils. It really does make a difference! What is the "window" method for means of transfer?

You take your sketch, tape it to a sunny window. Then tape your good paper over top and trace the sketch onto your good paper, very lightly. Keep your sketch as a map.

Same as a light box but free.smile.gif
