How to Use a Value Map

OK! So your drawing subject is lightly sketched. You now want to add shading. But, how do you know where to add each of those light, medium, and dark values? A little tool called a value map is used by many accomplished artists to figure out the correct placement of values in drawings (or paintings)!

This is a great lesson. Shading skin has always been difficult for me -I can identify ligh and dark values but they always get lost between the various shades of mediums! I had never thought to identify the shapes of different values and use a 'map' like this. I will now try this technique and see how it goes. Thank you, Brenda!
